Post CV joint play - how much is too much
on: January 29, 2017, 07:20

I've converted the Vitesse to what is essentially the rotoflex rear suspension of a GT6+ and then replaced the rotoflex rear axles with the CV joint axles from Canley Classics. When I took the car for a test drive, I noticed that when I coast, I get a regular speed related knocking from the rear. When I looked at the rear end to try to diagnose the issue, I noticed a fair bit of rotational slop in both inner CV joints. I got my dial indicator out and did a rather crude measurement and calculated that I've got approximately 0.35 degrees of slop in the inner joint. The outer joint has no perceptible play. I took one of the joints apart, thinking maybe these were used joints or something, but everything looks good. The balls, grooves and cage all look new.

Any ideas on how much play is expected on an inner joint? Any ideas on how to tighten this up? At this point I'm assuming the CV joints are the source of the knocking noise.

I bought the axles a couple of years ago and Canley has been unresponsive to my requests for information.
